The Prothrombin Time/International Normalized Ratio (PT/INR) Blood Clotting Test evaluates an individual’s coagulation status. Patients taking anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin, require monitoring to ensure that their blood clotting occurs within a therapeutic range. Individuals with accelerated clotting tendencies face a heightened risk of developing life-threatening conditions, including blood clot formation in vital organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and limbs. This elevates the likelihood of adverse events such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney dysfunction, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.

Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test that measures the time it takes for the liquid portion (plasma) of your blood to clot.

INR (International Normalized Ratio)

The international normalized ratio (INR) blood test tells you how long it takes for your blood to clot. It is used to test clotting times in people taking warfarin (a medicine used to treat and prevent blood clots).

Recommended For

Patients who are prescribed anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin or heparin, require regular PT/INR testing to monitor and adjust their medication dosage. Individuals with atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), or mechanical heart valves may require PT/INR monitoring. This test may be ordered for patients with clotting disorders, after certain surgeries, during hospitalization, to assess liver function, or to investigate unexplained bleeding or bruising. In cases where clotting disorders are suspected as risk factors for conditions like stroke or heart attack, healthcare providers may recommend PT/INR testing as part of the diagnostic process.
