About The Test
Test Overview
The MMR test is a blood test that checks for antibodies to measles, mumps, and rubella viruses. It shows whether a person has immunity due to prior infection or vaccination. It may be ordered to confirm immunity or screen pregnant individuals.
Please note: This test is not used to diagnose active infection.
Symptoms
- Fever
- Headache
- General discomfort, tiredness, or muscle aches
- Loss of appetite
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Measles: Cough, runny nose, red eyes, and widespread rash
- Mumps: Swollen salivary glands (puffy cheeks)
- Rubella: Rash and joint pain
Test Includes
Mumps Virus IgG Antibody
A mumps virus IgG antibody test detects the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in the blood, indicating a previous exposure to the mumps virus either through infection or vaccination. A positive result suggests the individual has developed immunity and is protected from future mumps infections, while a negative result indicates a lack of antibodies and potential susceptibility. These antibodies appear after the acute phase of an infection or after vaccination and are long-lasting, remaining in the body for life.
Measles IgG Antibody
A measles IgG antibody is an immunoglobulin G protein produced by the immune system that indicates past exposure to the measles virus, either through a previous infection or a measles vaccination, resulting in immunity. A blood test detecting measles IgG antibodies confirms immunity to the measles virus. Unlike measles IgM antibodies, which indicate a recent or current infection and decrease over time, measles IgG antibodies are produced later but remain in the body for life to provide long-lasting protection.
Rubella IgG Antibody
Rubella IgG antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to a previous infection with the rubella virus (German measles).
