About The Test

Test Overview

A venom allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to venom from stinging insects such as honeybees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets. People with venom allergies must take precautions to avoid insect stings and manage their condition through appropriate treatment, such as carrying an epinephrine auto-injector or undergoing venom immunotherapy.

Test Includes

Paper Wasp Allergen

The paper wasp (genus Polistes) is a stinging insect commonly found worldwide. Its venom contains several potent allergenic proteins that can trigger IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions in sensitized individuals, sometimes leading to systemic allergic reactions or anaphylaxis.

European Hornet Allergen

A European hornet allergen is a component of the European hornet's venom that can trigger an allergic reaction in some individuals. This allergen is typically a protein or peptide that the body's immune system identifies as a foreign invader.

Honeybee Allergen

A honey bee allergen is a substance in honeybee venom or bee products that can trigger an allergic reaction in individuals sensitive to them. These allergens are typically proteins, and the most common reactions include local skin reactions, generalized symptoms, or in severe cases, anaphylaxis.

Yellow Hornet Allergen

Yellow hornet venom allergens are proteins, specifically three main proteins, that can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. These proteins, with molecular weights of 45,000, 35,000, and 25,000, are found in yellow hornet venom. One of these, designated as antigen 5, is considered the major allergen in yellow hornet venom.

White Faced Hornet Allergen

White faced hornet venom contains several allergens, the most prominent being antigen 5 (Dol m 5). Other significant allergens include phospholipase A1 and hyaluronidase. These allergens are proteins that trigger an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals upon exposure to the venom.

Understanding Results

If this test confirms you have an allergy, you should follow up with your primary care provider or an allergy specialist.
